DNB Neurosurgery 6 year Course Review

Pros:

In a technological intensive specialty such as Neurosurgery, private hospitals can provide good exposure to it. The operation theatres are technologically fully equipped with Neuronavigation, High-end microscopes, C-Arm, O-arm, MRI Brain Operative Suite, Intraoperative USG,Neuromonitoring. All these are seldom available in majority of the government hospitals.
Oportunity to learn the principles from leading successful neurosurgeons who are in private practice

Cons: In the majority of the places where DNB is offered are Private institutes, so hands-on is restricted. Hands on usually includes a few steps in any procedure, otherwise mostly you are assisting.

1st Year
Posting in General Surgery to learn basic principles of
surgery, basic surgical skills, exposure to patients and
operative procedures in general surgery with rotation to
orthopedics /Plastic Surgery/ Pediatrics/ENT.
2nd – 3rd year

Posting in Neurosurgery.
Exposure to Basic Neurosciences (Neuroanatomy,
Neurophysiology, Neurochemistry, Neuropathology,
Neuropharmacology, Clinical Neurology), by way of didactic lectures, symposia, etc.
Patient care, history taking and neurological examination, case-sheet writing, preparing discharge summaries, supervised emergency calls, Academic activity. Neurology posting for 6 weeks during the second year. 3 weeks posting in neuro interventional lab.

I'm a resident in the cardiothoracic surgery and I'm on the thoracic surgery program.. I was planning to apply for the MRCS part 1, and I wonder if the part 2 MRCS will be as board exam for the thoracic surgery or I should finish the MRCS then do fellow in thoracic ?

I wish you can help me.

I searched in your recent post about fellowship but I didn't find thoracic or cardiothoracic fellowship in the website.

You have 2 options. 1) get MRCS , get GMC registration and then apply for a cardiothoracic surgery job in the UK. 2) If you want to practice in your own country -> give FRCS cardiothoracic.

MRCS is just general surgery. Part 1 is MCQ based. Part 2 is Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE).

Just wanted to ask 1 doubt.

Myself , i completed MS General surgery and i am working here in india as Asst Prof since past 5 years.

I wish to relocate to UK.

My ultimate aim is to become a consultant there .

However , i could find that there are 2 boards of FRCS and international FRCS is not of much importance when it comes to working in UK .

Is it true sir?

Anyways i decided to appear for MRCS PART A now due to this .

But if i am wrong , i will prepare for FRCS from here itself

Response: If relocation to the UK is your priority, clear MRCS A and B first, then IELTS, get GMC registration, get a training job (matching your experience level) , and then give FRCS General Surgery there...
