Who was Dr Sabiston?
David Coston Sabiston, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S. (October 4, 1924 -January 26, 2009.) was an early pioneer in the field of cardiac surgery. He carried out an innovative procedure that opened the way for modern coronary bypass surgery. The first clinical case of a direct hand-sewn coronary anastomosis was performed by David Sabiston on April 4, 1962, when he anastomosed the saphenous vein graft (SVG) to the Right Coronary Artery at Johns Hopkins.

Sabiston has published more than 300 peer-reviewed research papers on different aspects of cardiothoracic surgery throughout his lifetime in addition to more than 35 books and many book chapters. One of his books, ” Sabiston’s Textbook of Surgery: the Biological Basis of Modern Surgical Practice,” is currently on its twenty first edition and being under the direction of Drs. Townsend, Beauchamp, Evers, and Mattox. It is considered to be the most authoritative guide to surgical procedures.
