He carried out an innovative procedure that opened the way for modern coronary bypass surgery. Note the end-to-end aortocoronary anastomosis using reversed greater saphenous vein. The patient was a reoperation one year after right coronary endarterectomy, and died of a stroke that occurred on the fourth postoperative day.

Sabiston has published more than 300 peer-reviewed research papers on different aspects of cardiothoracic surgery throughout his lifetime in addition to more than 35 books and many book chapters. One of his books, ” Sabiston’s Textbook of Surgery: the Biological Basis of Modern Surgical Practice,” is currently on its twenty first edition and being under the direction of Drs.
